Seagulls still ‘don’t give a dam’ about patents (we still don’t have a photo of a Honey Badger… (For a re-visit of that hilarious video, see this link)). But if you ‘give a dam’ about patents, check out the USPTO’s  October 1st PTAB webinar

What: USPTO/Patent Trial And Appeal Board webinar series, to discuss new proposed rules governing PTAB practice.

When: October 1, 2015 at 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. EST (U.S.)

Where: Via Webinar or Call-In.  See webcast/call-in instructions and links below.

Back in February, the  United States Patent and Trademark Office began its first-ever PTAB “Boardside Chat” series. The talks have been covering various topics relating to patent practice before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (“PTAB”) and under the fairly new-ish America Invents Act (“AIA”).

If you’re unfamiliar with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (“PTAB” for short), you might be wondering what it is, exactly what it does and why you’d want to spend an hour of your precious time listening to it. The PTAB includes “statutory members” and Administrative Patent Judges. As a statutory tribunal, the PTAB reviews appeals filed by potential patentees wanting to challenge adverse patent examiner decisions, and also third-party challenges to patents that happen after a patent has been issued.

The next upcoming chat, on Thursday October 1st, 2015, will cover new proposed rules governing patent trial proceedings at the USPTO under the AIA.  Best of all, there is no cost to attend the webinar. See below for important access info. Note that all of the talks will take place at 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (U.S.). To convert the time to your own time zone, you can go here, or another time-zone converter.

Lead PTAB Judge Susan Mitchell will walk through the proposed rule-changes followed by a discussion with Lead Judges Mike Tierney and Tom Gianetti on the background, rationale, and implications of the proposed rules.  You can review the proposed rules in advance by goting to the Federal Register Notice available here.

And at the conclusion of the webinar, viewers will have the opportunity to pose questions to the judges and practitioners. The USPTO invites all those interested, to participate in the development of the proposed AIA trial rules and to share their input at the webinar.
